Designing a Custom Home

Designing a custom home is an absolute adventure. From setting up the plans and finding the land, to starting construction. Although it takes months of planning in the end its very rewarding. You’ll get to see something you dreamed of be turned into reality. Read below and get inspired!

Plan and Set Goals

Before starting, you need to thoroughly plan what it’s going to look like. Ask yourself questions like: what kind of environment do I want? How do I want to personalize this? And most importantly, is it doable?

Once you know the jest of the project, make a must haves list. This will help you stay practical. Underestimating a project of this size could end costing thousands of dollars. A home on paper is cheaper than one in the real world.

One fun way to get inspired and find unique ideas is to make a notebook ideas and pictures. Add whatever comes to mind – a custom home magazine or layout idea.

Decide on a Budget

Your budget is the life blood of the this project. You might have the best design plans but without a source of funding, it won’t survive.

When making your budget, always start with what you can afford. Don’t lose yourself in a custom home money trap. If you plan to run into problem now, when you do run into one you’ll be able to easily maneuver around it.

Write out every fee: construction, plumbing, permits, landscaping, etc. Calculate each variable and put it on file. Microsoft excel is a common tool.

Decide Where to Build

The next step is to find a location for the home. This is more of a personal decision. Do you want to live in the city? A suburb? Next to a beach? In the mountains? Area with a solid community? Good schools? Where your closest neighbor is 10 miles away? It all depends on what you’re looking for

Start Building!

Lastly, get your hands dirty and start construction. This will include:

  • Getting a Permit
  • Pouring a Foundation
  • Building the Frame
  • Plumbing, Electrical, and HVAC
  • Insulating the home
  • Setting up drywall
  • Interior and exterior touchups
  • Flooring Design
  • Inspect the home
